The word “oregano” (from origanum) comes from the Greek and means “joy of the mountain”. In Ancient Greece, people believed that this herb had the magical power to bring happiness. Oregano is considered a tonic for the digestive tract. In infusions, it is used to treat problems, such as cough, bronchitis and bowel colic. It is also a traditional seasoning of the Italian cuisine, in which the herb is an ingredient of tomato sauces, aubergine parmigiana, pasta and pizzas. Native to Asia and Europe, the plant has several species, all quite aromatic, and its height ranges from 25 to 80 centimeters. Oregano acts as an antioxidant due to the presence of phenolic acid and flavonoids in its composition. |
