Ethiopia, India and Nepal are great producers of this plant, which can grow up to 1.5 meter in height. From niger seeds is extracted an oil used in paint and soap manufacturing. This oil can be used as substitute for the olive oil and prevent rheumatism. In Ethiopia, seeds are crushed and added to honey, to be used in cakes. The dark and long niger seed is appreciated by several bird species, such as canaries, wild birds and parakeets. It has an excellent balance between calcium and phosphorus, and it is source of protein. |
