Native to North America and Central America, sunflowers were raised by native peoples for feeding. Vegetal oil is extracted from the seed of this plant, and has applications in several areas, such as cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical, and veterinary industry, manufacturing of paints, soap, and as basic oil for massages, among others. It is considered to be a kind of noble oil, and its nutritional quality has high levels of linoleic acid (Omega 6) and tocopherols (vitamin E), which helps reducing cholesterol levels in blood. Source of proteins, ethereal extract and minerals, is widely used in feeding of parakeets and parrots. In Brazil, it is also involved in the biodiesel production. Symbolically, the sunflower means fame, success, luck and happiness. |
