It is a native plant of southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. It can grow up to 80 centimeters tall. With a gentle fruit scent, its tea has calming and sedative qualities. It also prevents insomnia, stress, fever, headaches and bowel colic. In aromatherapy, it is used to treat depressive individuals. Due to its attractive smell, lemon balm is largely used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, perfumes, food, soft drinks and liqueurs. As a seasoning, it gives food a better taste, as it is similar to lemon. It is used to cook fish, poultry and prepare salads. Its scientific name – Melissa officinalis – is homage to the Greek nymph Melona, protector of the bees. |
