It is a plant which is bred from the spontaneous crossing between kale and kohlrabi. Its origin is still unknown, but studies show that it may have appeared in the Mediterranean. The leaves are edible, but the consumption of seeds is more popular. In nutrition, rapeseed is known by the presence of essential oils with medicinal characteristics. With a taste similar to broccoli, eating it while in the form of sprouts is recommended. Its presence is largely noted in Asian, Spanish, Portuguese, and French cuisines, besides among followers of rawism. From the rapeseed, it was produced canola, a genetically modified seed widely used in oil and biodiesel production. Rapeseed seeds are also utilized in bird feeding.
