It is a genus of plant with several species. The most documented one is Equisetum arvense which has European origin. The giant horsetail is found almost worldwide and grows between 20 centimeters to 1 meter. Some of them, such as the Brazilian native species (Equisetum giganteum), can grow up to 5 meters tall. There are reports of plant fossils with more than 300 million years which are similar to the giant horsetail. It is rich in silicon, calcium and potassium, and widely used as diuretic, wound healing, or in the treatment of renal infections, osteoporosis, gastric ulcer and rheumatism. It can also be used to strengthen nails, make the hair shine, clean the skin and prevent stretch marks. |
